Treatment Options for Hammertoe

When the joints of the toes begin to bend severely, often resembling a “hammer,” this condition is referred to as hammertoe. It is typically a deformity of the toes, generally caused by imbalances in the tendons, and this may change the structure of the toe. Pain and discomfort are associated with hammertoes, and calluses and corns often form on the bottom of the foot. This condition will worsen over time, and treatment options should be considered. It’s important to trim any calluses that may be present, and this is typically performed by a podiatrist. Splints may be attached to the foot to realign the toes, and orthotics may be recommended to help the foot feel more comfortable. If you have a severe case of hammertoe, surgery may be required to permanently repair the toe.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Princeton Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Symptoms of a Toenail Fungus

White or yellow toenails is often indicative of a toenail fungus. Severe fungal infections can cause thickening of the nail, and even cause it to crumble and fall off the toe. If the feet are prone to excessive sweating, the chances may be increased for developing a toenail fungus. Additionally, this condition is contagious, and is often spread by walking barefoot in public places such as on shower floors and around community pools. Treatment remedies that may aid in helping the foot to feel better may include using a foot powder designed to eliminate moisture. Choosing to change socks often and keeping the toenails dry and trimmed will help the toes to feel better. A consultation with a podiatrist is recommended for treatment options.

For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Princeton Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

How Do I Know if I Have Gout?

When excess uric acid is present in the blood, it may cause a painful condition referred to as gout. Gout is a form of arthritis, and the causes of it may also lead to potential problems involving the kidneys. Pain, swelling, and extreme tenderness are common symptoms associated with this condition, and they generally continue for 7-10 days. There are several possible causes of gout, two of which are a predisposed inherited trait and a diet largely consisting of excess red meat, beer, and sugar. An attack of gout must first be diagnosed, and there are several ways this can be accomplished. X-rays may be taken, in addition to performing a procedure where a small amount of fluid is removed from the joint that appears to be affected. Treatment for this condition will depend on the severity of the disorder, and a consultation with a podiatrist is advised for the best available options.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Princeton Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Walking or Running Shoes: How to Choose

Many people are unaware of the differences between walking and running shoes. Both types of shoes have different features that are meant to support the foot. Walking shoes tend to be firmer, and they may not be as flexible as shoes that are made for running. This enables the walker to have additional stability that’s needed for proper posture. The walker benefits from shoes that are lighter because the feet are properly supported. Recent research has suggested that adequate cushioning is necessary for comfort and support, however an excess of this may make the shoe too heavy for walking. When choosing shoes that are made for running, it’s important to take the running technique into account. If the impact is felt on the balls of the feet, a slightly higher heel will be beneficial for proper support. For runners whose midfoot meets with the ground, lower heels will be more favorable for achieving maximum comfort and stability.

For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with one of our podiatrists from Princeton Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.

Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes

There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.

You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.

Differences

Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.

Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.
